Poroshenko refused to meet with Nuland – forcing Kyiv to peace is failing
Petro Poroshenko yesterday refused to meet with US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland during her visit to Kyiv, sending Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Konstantin Eliseev in his place. Poroshenko finds himself in a difficult situation - the West is demanding that he start a dialogue with Donbass, but Ukrainian nationalists and ATO veterans categorically reject such a scenario.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this today.
“The Ukrainian government drove itself into a corner at the time of signing the Minsk agreements, which did not clearly indicate who was opposing Ukraine in the Donbass. On this basis, the West is now putting pressure on the Ukrainian authorities to resolve the conflict as an internal confrontation,” the publication says.

Ukrainian political scientist Vitaly Bala told the newspaper that EU and US politicians are interested on the eve of the elections to demonstrate the success of the settlement in Ukraine.
“But do they take into account the opinion of Ukrainian society? Social polls show that the majority of our citizens are against the special status of Donbass and react very negatively to the possibility of legalizing the DPR and LPR in any form. The Verkhovna Rada does not have 300 votes to finally approve the constitutional section on decentralization, which mentions a special procedure for self-government in the territory of Donbass that is not controlled by Ukraine,” the political scientist said.
The expert noted that in such circumstances, Poroshenko’s team cannot ignore the opinion of Western partners, but cannot blindly implement their recommendations. One threatens pressure (including financial) from the West, the other threatens with internal conflict in Ukraine. "What will happen next? Nobody will tell. We need to try to convey our position, explain to our partners that they are simplifying the situation and not taking into account many factors. At the end of the day, time is on our side,” Bala said.
Today Nuland in Russia is scheduled to meet with Russian Presidential Aide Vladislav Surkov.
