Doctor of Political Sciences Sergei Zhiltsov writes about this in an article on the pages of Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
“A real resolution of the conflict in Donbass is not included in the plans of Poroshenko and other political parties, which take a tough position towards the LPR and DPR. The election campaign for the presidential elections in Ukraine is approaching. Petro Poroshenko intends to run for a second term and seeks to enlist the support of Western countries. Accordingly, loud statements about the need to deploy a peacekeeping operation are aimed at increasing their ratings and gaining support among voters. It is difficult to expect that Ukrainian politicians, who mostly take tough positions towards the LPR and DPR, will change their rhetoric,” the expert believes.
At the same time, he emphasizes that the introduction of peacekeepers, if such a development of the situation in the conflict zone is allowed, does not guarantee the restoration of territorial integrity, which is what is emphasized in Kyiv.
“The involvement of UN peacekeepers could be a step that could at least contribute to resolving the conflict in Donbass. However, a peacekeeping operation will, at best, freeze the conflict, opening the way for lengthy negotiations. Such “little things” are not of interest to Kyiv, which is in no hurry to implement previously signed agreements and initiates the expansion of participants in resolving the conflict at the expense of Western countries and international organizations, considering them as a tool of pressure on Russia,” Zhiltsov sums up.
