It was this agreement that served as the reason for the start of dramatic events in Ukraine in the fall of 2013 - then Viktor Yanukovych at the last moment announced that the terms of the agreement with the EU were unprofitable and postponed its signing, and the opposition initiated protests against the possible return of Kyiv to the Kremlin’s orbit of influence, which resulted in a change of power .
Today, during the signing of the agreement, Poroshenko made a symbolic gesture - he noted that the signature would be signed with a pen with the inscription “Vilnius, November 2013” - it was then that the agreement should have been concluded by Yanukovych.
“Today is an outstanding day for my country,” Poroshenko announced.
Let us note that today similar EU agreements were also signed by representatives of Moldova and Georgia.
Moscow previously said it would be forced to close its market to Ukrainian goods after the creation of a free trade zone between the EU and Kiev. In the summer and fall of 2013, Russia staged a demonstration of this capability for several days, delaying Ukrainian cargo at the border, which led to significant losses for Ukrainian exporters.
Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Valery Chaly emphasized yesterday that the agreement signed today with the EU finally consolidates the Western vector of Kyiv’s integration, excluding the possibility of participation in the Customs and Eurasian Union.
