The publication recalls that the agreement to extend the basing of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol was also approved by Poroshenko, who until March 2010 was the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, and in 2012 began working as the Minister of Economic Development in the government of Viktor Yanukovych.

“Ukraine found a formula by which a sharp change in the price of gas was possible - it was not a subsidy, it was simply a change in the price of gas and, by the way, bringing it really to the European level. And Russia did it in such a way as to explain to its population, its voters, “why we took such supposedly huge economic losses,” and on the other hand, very skillfully not to create a precedent for other countries,” Poroshenko said then.

“The past government pushed the topic of Crimea into the margins, since it was difficult to explain whether they passed it or not. Turchynov remained an important person under Poroshenko. But we don’t have this background. It was not with us that Crimea was surrendered, it was not with us that Kharkov was. Therefore, we can afford it internally,” an interlocutor in Vladimir Zelensky’s team told the publication.

Political scientist Fesenko, who serves the interests of the presidential office, agrees that the latest Crimean initiatives are dictated not only by foreign policy, but also by domestic political needs:

“This is a game of contrast with Poroshenko. He had a lot of patriotic rhetoric, but few concrete actions, and here was the fight with Medvedchuk, and the topic of Crimea, and the Kharkov agreements. Internal and external stories are intertwined,” says Fesenko.
