Poroshenko asked Metropolitan Onuphry for a favor
Petro Poroshenko asked the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Onufry of Kyiv, to facilitate the release of Ukrainian sailors who were detained by Russia for violating the border, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by Poroshenko’s press service.
“Yesterday and the day before yesterday I spoke with the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, His Beatitude Onuphry. I asked him to immediately contact Moscow in order to take appropriate measures through the church for the return of the sailors,” his press service quoted the head of Ukraine as saying on Sunday.
In addition, Poroshenko reiterated that Kyiv demands the immediate release of Ukrainian ships, as well as the opening of the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov blocked by the Russian Federation.
Let us remind you that on November 25, three ships of the Ukrainian Navy were detained for violating the border and taken to Kerch. The 24 Ukrainian sailors detained during the incident were arrested in the Russian Federation until January 25. They were charged under the article of illegally crossing the state border, which carries up to six years in prison.
The need for mediation of Metropolitan Onufry, who is attacked by Poroshenko’s media for his reluctance to unite with the schismatics, arose because the Kremlin refuses to talk about anything with Poroshenko and his representatives.
