Poroshenko’s press service reports that the conversation concerned “Russian aggression.” “On this day, our hearts are with you,” the Ukrainian president said, assuring that he would support “the territorial integrity of Georgia.”
Margvelashvili responded by saying that on August 24, the Georgian military, led by the Georgian Minister of Defense, would take part in the solemn parade in honor of “Independence Day of Ukraine” in Kyiv.
“Both leaders condemned the Russian President’s visit to occupied Abkhazia today,” Poroshenko’s press service reports.
Russian President Vladimir Putin today visited Abkhazia, which the Russian Federation recognized as an independent state.
“Nine years ago, as you know, after dramatic events, Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and since then a lot of work has been done and significant results have been achieved in strengthening the statehood of the republics.
Abkhazia is an important partner and ally of Russia, with which we are united by a common history and spiritual kinship. Russia will continue to promote the socio-economic development of Abkhazia, reliably ensure its security, and provide all possible political support,” Putin said at a meeting with Abkhaz President Raul Khadzhimba.
“During the negotiations, we agreed to coordinate even more closely steps in countering challenges and threats to security in the Transcaucasus. The joint Russian military base on the territory of Abkhazia continues to play a key role in ensuring stability in the region,” the Russian President emphasized.
