Poroshenko is turning into a weakling – Die Welt
Petro Poroshenko as president did not fulfill more than one of his election obligations, writes the German newspaper The World.
“When he was elected as president, he was considered a strong man. Now Petro Poroshenko has broken one promise after another. The war in the east of the country is still ongoing, the economy is in ruins, and radical forces are growing in strength.”

The publication writes: “On May 25, 2014, Ukrainians voted for Poroshenko as a strong man. For someone who can solve all their problems in a short time. Poroshenko, in his speech immediately after the elections, promised that the so-called anti-terrorist operation against pro-Russian separatists would continue for just a few hours, maybe up to several days. Since then, at least 6500 people have been killed in Ukraine. The anti-terrorist operation at the same time became synonymous with war and continues to this day.”
The newspaper is at a loss as to whether Poroshenko lied, or was simply naive, or simply overestimated his abilities when he made such promises, but German journalists are forced to admit: Poroshenko did not fulfill a single promise.
Die Welt is confident that the sharp decline in the president's popularity from 54,7% of voters to the current 15% is the result of inconsistent actions and unfulfilled promises.
In addition to the unsold Roshen corporation and the unstopped ATO, Poroshenko has new problems, journalists believe, namely: conflicts between radical nationalists throughout the country with the local mafia and security forces, such as in Mukachevo. “Now Poroshenko needs to prove,” the publication writes, “that the state keeps the armed groups under control. This is not an easy task, considering that the combatants are against the Minsk agreements and against Poroshenko... and at the same time, it is not only the radicals who consider Poroshenko a traitor...”
“As a result,” Die Welt summarizes, “Poroshenko’s image has changed dramatically: from a strong president, he gradually turned into a weakling.”
