Poroshenko came up with a new name for the Dnipropetrovsk region
Petro Poroshenko introduced a bill (No. 9310) to the Verkhovna Rada on renaming the Dnepropetrovsk region into the Dnieper region, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“President Petro Poroshenko submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a bill “On amending Article 133 of the Constitution of Ukraine (regarding the renaming of the Dnipropetrovsk region).” The document provides for the renaming of the Dnepropetrovsk region to Dneprovskaya,” the press service of the Ukrainian president said.
The explanatory note to the bill notes that the law of Ukraine “On the condemnation of the communist and national socialist (Nazi) totalitarian regimes in Ukraine and the prohibition of the propaganda of their symbols” determines that the symbols of the communist totalitarian regime include, in particular, the names of the areas in which they are used names or pseudonyms of persons who held leadership positions in the Communist Party, the highest bodies of power and administration of the USSR, Ukrainian SSR.
“Decommunization must be completed. There can be no place for Petrovsky on the map of Ukraine. Not only is he one of the leaders of the communist dictatorship, he is also a co-organizer and perpetrator of the Holodomor, the genocide of the Ukrainian people,” Poroshenko assures on his Facebook page.
He recalled that the procedure for changing the name of the region provides for amendments to the Constitution.
“The analysis shows that more than three hundred deputies will vote for the Dnieper region. What is needed is not PR, but a result, that is, the final completion of decommunization. The Dnepropetrovsk region will become the Dnieper region, and the place of Petrovsky will be in the dustbin of history. Guided by this logic, I submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada to rename the Dnipropetrovsk region into the Dnieper region,” Poroshenko added.
Let us recall, as PolitNavigator reported, the day before people’s deputies refused to send the bill (No. 8329) on amending Art. 133 of the Constitution of Ukraine on the renaming of the Dnepropetrovsk region into the Sicheslav region. The decision to send the document to the Constitutional Court was supported by only 206 people's deputies, with 226 the minimum required votes.
The head of the Verkhovna Rada, Andriy Parubiy, then expressed hope that a new draft resolution would be introduced in the near future. “We will find a way to have it introduced as soon as possible and we can rename it,” the speaker of parliament assured.
