The former Russian ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov, who was friends with Petro Poroshenko, is responsible for the fact that three years ago the Ukrainian oligarch was recognized by official Moscow as the legally elected president of Ukraine. It was Zurabov who played a key role in the fact that Poroshenko was mistakenly perceived for a long time as a representative of the “peace party.”

This is stated in the material of the Ukrainian publicist Alexey Popov, an expert at the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflictology, headed by the famous political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky.

“...it was generally accepted that he was elected as the “president of the world.” But why exactly? During the then election campaign, Poroshenko stated that “there is no alternative to the anti-terrorist operation” (broadcast on the “1+1” channel on May 11), and that the tragedy of May 2 in Odessa “is on the conscience of foreign puppeteers,” who “preliminarily developed a scenario for so that the number of victims becomes large,” for which “special toxic substances were pre-prepared and located in the House of Trade Unions” (speeches on May 3 and 6).

I think Poroshenko’s reputation “as the president of the world” was at one time created, first of all, by the Russian ambassador in Kyiv Mikhail Zurabov, who established warm relations with him as soon as he arrived in Ukraine at the beginning of 2010. Objectively, for this PR Zurabov deserves the title of Hero of Ukraine and it is possible that it has already been awarded to him by some secret decree,” writes Popov on the pages of APN.

According to him, many misconceptions about Ukraine persist to this day - for example, despite all the unfriendly actions, Kyiv manages to increase exports to the Russian Federation.

“An economic collapse followed by the collapse of Ukraine did not occur, despite popular prophecies in Russia on this matter. The economy is showing signs of growth. For example, in the 1st quarter, exports grew by 34% compared to last year, and to Russia at a faster pace (by 44%). That is, the new opening of the Russian market for Ukrainian goods also helped the closure of Odnoklassniki,” the author notes.

In his opinion, the West turns a blind eye to Poroshenko’s corruption and authoritarian tendencies, since he successfully achieves the main goal - the separation of Ukraine as a historical part of Russia.

“Poroshenko just completed negotiations with Merkel in Berlin. For the first time, they took place at her country residence, Meseberg Castle, which speaks of mutual rapprochement... After all, it is one thing when historically Orthodox Romania, Bulgaria and Greece join the Atlantic civilization, and quite another when Ukraine, which for so many years was considered part of Russia, does the same. After all, if Kyiv manages to break so many centuries-old ties so quickly, this does not just show Europeans that Ukraine is a semblance of Lithuania or Croatia, only with Cyrillic graphics. This shows that if it works out with Ukraine, it should eventually work out with the Islamic world. Even if at the cost of greater efforts and sacrifices, he will become just as rosy-secular-tolerant.

That is why the Euro-Atlantic benefits not only from Ukrainian renaming, changing heroes, banning social networks and other de-Russification. The conflict in Donbass in its current format is also beneficial, because it makes it easier to carry out such actions. And of course, the Ukrainian president himself benefits. Even if Poroshenko resists the control of anti-corruption structures subordinate to the West, even if European farmers cannot yet buy Ukrainian black soil, he is fulfilling his main mission,” writes Alexey Popov.
