Poroshenko brought a surprise box to the UN
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko once again complained to the international community about the detention by Russian border guards of Navy sailors who violated the state border in the Sea of Azov.
The President of Ukraine made a corresponding address during a meeting of the UN General Assembly, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia’s actions fully fall within the definition of aggression, according to the relevant resolution of the 1974 UN General Assembly. As a result, the ships were damaged and captured. 24 crew members, including three who were injured, were captured and are now being held illegally by Russia. I want to point out that these are not criminals, they should be treated like prisoners of war, according to the norms of the Geneva Conventions. But Russia does not listen to numerous calls to immediately and unconditionally release the captured sailors,” Poroshenko said.
At the same time, he called on the UN Secretary General to seek the release of Ukrainian sailors by Russia, providing as an argument a petition from “thousands of Ukrainians.”
“Today I brought with me an appeal to the UN Secretary General with a request to put pressure on Moscow in order to release the Ukrainian sailors. It was signed by thousands of Ukrainians literally over the past few days. And now I speak on their behalf, we sincerely count on your support,” he addressed the audience, taking out a stack of sheets from a blue and yellow box.
The Ukrainian president also cited statistics on the number of Russian weapons located on the territory of the Crimea Republic, stating that “Russia is changing the strategic balance in the region and beyond.”
