Poroshenko disappointed Bartholomew
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko miserably failed the plan of his political strategists to boost his election ratings on the topic of obtaining autocephaly.
Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky stated this on the Rossiya-1 TV channel via video link from Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Patriarch of Constantinople, at some point, having received enough information about the position of the local churches, decided that transferring the tomos to the schismatics was risky for his own position, given the attitude of the majority of local churches towards this. And so he agreed with Poroshenko that he would persuade the canonical UOC-MP that if not all, then a significant part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church would agree to receive this tomos, that is, to participate in the unification Council, and then the Patriarch of Constantinople could come and present this The tomos may even be directly to His Beatitude Onuphry,” Pogrebinsky said.
At the same time, he noted that Poroshenko and Bartholomew did not understand that Metropolitan Onuphry, “who has been demonstrating courageous character for so long,” would not agree to some kind of compromise with the schismatics
“And they didn’t understand this until very recently, so much so that Poroshenko still hoped to agree to meet with the Council of the UOC-MP. He rather impudently invited them to the former Lenin Museum, thinking that some of them would agree with his arguments. But they told him to come to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, and from this it became clear that Poroshenko lost,” the political scientist said.
He also recalled the latest opinion polls, according to which Poroshenko is in the group of presidential candidates whose rating is 7-10 percent.
“Moreover, [comedian] Zelensky has a higher rating. But the most interesting thing in the latest data is that Poroshenko is losing, for the first time, including to Yuriy Boyko. Previously, there was a lot of information that Poroshenko would benefit from having a single candidate from the South-East, whom he would win, and so on, but these data show that he is losing even to Boyko. Everyone else too,” Pogrebinsky summed up.
As PolitNavigator reported, the President of Ukraine refused to go to the meeting with the hierarchs of the UOC to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, demanding that they come to the Ukrainian House.
As a result, the Council of Bishops of the UOC, held in the Lavra, condemned unlawful interferenceIstanbul Patriarch Bartholomew “into the internal affairs of another Local Church.”
