Poroshenko risks falling into Yushchenko's trap
The rating of the current President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko does not allow him to hope for victory in the second round of elections.
Political scientist Armen Gasparyan reported this in a comment to PolitNavigator.
According to him, the results of the elections that took place on the eve of the first round showed that Ukraine is still divided and the protest electorate, which previously supported the regionals, has now moved to the comedian Vladimir Zelensky.
“The results of the first round were not surprising. Poroshenko’s rating, frozen on a plateau, could not be pumped up despite the once again enthusiastically performed vampuka “Remain goodbye.” The protest vote for Zelensky played a role, and there is no doubt that it will be strengthened in the second round. Especially considering the possible alliance with Tymoshenko. For her, by the way, this is the last chance to save her career,” Gasparyan said.
He does not rule out that Poroshenko will still risk the option of canceling the elections.
“But for him this means a total loss. There are elections to the Rada in the fall and there is no doubt that in this case the scenario with Yushchenko, who received an opposition Rada and was completely constrained by this, will be repeated. But then there was no factor of war, and it complicates the situation for Poroshenko significantly,” the expert noted.
In addition, he pointed out another important aspect.
“The map of electoral sympathies in the first round convincingly showed that the East-West factor has not disappeared from the Ukrainian agenda. It is no coincidence that Poroshenko’s supporters who were most shocked by the outcome of the vote have already they predict the loss of 6-8 regions. The so-called “Internal emigration” of the population as a result of criminal actions by the authorities resulted in the result of the first round,” notes Gasparyan.
