This interpretation of the fighting in the Donbass was given by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in a speech on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of dozens of people in the center of Kyiv during a shootout between Maidan activists and employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
“The Revolution of Dignity became the first and, most importantly, winning battle in the war for our independence,” believes the Ukrainian guarantor. – And when the enemy saw that the peaceful Anschluss of Ukraine into the Customs Union was choking, he decided to dismember Ukraine with tanks and hail. But this adventure was also not destined to come true. Once again, the Ukrainian army, with popular volunteer support, stopped the enemy on the Far Eastern borders. Ukrainians, not born for war, peaceful Ukrainians, because we are a peaceful people, took up arms and stopped a well-trained army - one of the most powerful in the world and on the continent.”
According to the president, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians were inspired to fight Russian aggression by the death of the “heavenly hundred.”
“At least four thousand members of the Maidan self-defense, hundreds of our self-defense, went to the front, where they defend the independence of their country from the power of the dark, damned horde tooth and nail,” Petro Poroshenko added. – We are confronted by a powerful enemy, much more numerous than us, and, unfortunately, much better armed. He had been hatching plans to attack us for years. He prepared his armed forces precisely for this and formed a fifth column within our country. But we are still stronger because the truth is with us, and we are stronger because God is with us. For us, this war for our land, for our land, is a fair war, but for the enemy it is not.”
