Poroshenko got into trouble with the “Azov package” of sanctions
The President of Ukraine thanked the EU for the “Azov package” of anti-Russian sanctions, although in fact Brussels did not impose any new sanctions against the Russian Federation.

“I welcome the decision of the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives to launch a new “Azov package” of sanctions against Russia for an open and brazen act of armed aggression against Ukrainian sailors and ships in the Black Sea and the Kerch Strait,” the publication quotes Poroshenko’s words, which were immediately duplicated and supported by many Ukrainian officials.
“Neither the president nor the minister specified the details of the sanctions, and this is generally justified: the decision of the European Union should be made public by the European Union itself. Officially, this decision will be made and made public, as expected, in mid-March. But there is every reason to assume that the silence of government officials has another reason than the desire to maintain intrigue,” writes the EP.
The author of the publication clarifies that, firstly, “this NOT sanctions against Russia,” and secondly, they can hardly be called a “package.” At the same time, it is indicated that Poroshenko’s hopes for strengthening sanctions are unrealistic, since “for now, the decision of the EU leaders that sanctions against Russia there won’t be any for the Azov attack.”
It is noted that the EU will only publish a list of eight Russian military personnel and FSB representatives who will be subject to a ban on entry into the EU and “seizure of assets” if any are found in European jurisdiction.
“These sanctions, let’s be honest, are purely symbolic and will not have an impact even on those against whom they are imposed. Russian sources report that in recent years, local security officers and many military personnel have been banned from traveling to the EU without the consent of the leadership. There is no question of keeping “assets” in European countries. And most importantly: personal sanctions, by definition, are not sanctions “against Russia.” This is a restriction not against the state, but against specific eight people (and those who carry out decisions and do not make them),” the publication emphasizes.
In addition, the article says that the president, with his statements, closed negotiations on increasing pressure on the Kremlin.
“After all, if Ukraine believes that the “Azov package” has already been accepted, then all further requests from Ukraine to consider it are doomed to failure. […] But Western partners also read Poroshenko’s official statements. And now they have reason to answer, they say, if your president believes that the EU approved exactly what Ukraine wanted, then what are we talking about? What other sanctions could be on the table if Poroshenko believes that the “Azov package” has been approved?” the publication warns.
As PolitNavigator reported, in November last year, the Ukrainian Navy attempted to transfer two small armored artillery boats, Berdyansk and Nikopol, as well as the tugboat Yany Kapu, from Odessa to Mariupol on the Sea of Azov.
