“For six long and incredibly difficult years, Ukraine was first the scene of games of two totalitarian regimes, and then of especially fierce and large-scale hostilities,” Poroshenko said in his address.
“More than 60 percent of the Wehrmacht ground forces were defeated here. More than 9 million immigrants from Ukraine began to fight the enemy as part of the Red Army. Millions more Ukrainians fought the Nazis and their allies as part of the UPA, in the ranks of Soviet partisan formations, in the ranks of the Polish Army, the American, Australian, British, Canadian armies, and French, Yugoslav and Slovak resistance units,” the Ukrainian president lists.
“The borders of Ukraine were unshakable for 70 years, until war returned to us again. This time it came not from the west, but from the east,” Poroshenko notes.
