Poroshenko seeks to take Gorbachev's place on the international stage
The current President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, continues to stubbornly fight for victory in recent days, although he understands that he has no chance. Nevertheless, by remaining politically active until the very end, he expects to thus maintain minimal domestic political weight and wide recognition at the international level.
Political consultant of the GN Consulting company Mikhail Katsin stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Why is Poroshenko now conducting an active information campaign, although he understands that he will not be able to defeat Zelensky and win back this 15% (gap)? Firstly, if he doesn’t fight now, then his faction, the BPP, will completely crumble. And Poroshenko as a political player is losing weight, his business interests and personal safety will be under threat and he may become a victim of political persecution.
On the other hand, if he now loses decently and gains a significant number of votes, this allows him to retain part of the team in the new political season. And, most importantly, he remains a significant player on the international stage.
Poroshenko, even after losing the elections, wants to maintain some kind of international legitimacy. He will play "Gorbachev" who lost all support within the country, but was accepted and recognized and remains recognized by the entire international community. Poroshenko also wants the same thing - so that after some time they would say that under him NABU, the Anti-Corruption Court, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office were created, there was a visa-free regime and other things that would preserve his image in the international community,” he said.
