Poroshenko: only a rusty Ukrainian pipe can save Europe from Russia
The Ukrainian gas transport system (GTS) is holding back Russia's offensive in Europe.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced this today in Aachen following negotiations with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, who did not speak to the press.
“We raised this topic in negotiations with Germany, France, and the European Commission. This poses an extremely great danger, I emphasize, not only for Ukraine and not only financial. This is a geostrategic danger, including a defensive one. The gas transportation system of Ukraine is one of the elements of deterring the aggressor. We cannot treat this extremely important function irresponsibly,” Poroshenko said.
He claims that Ukraine has broad support in the European Union on this issue. “We are doing everything possible to convey an objective picture and not allow Russia to use Nord Stream as an element of hybrid aggression not only against Ukraine, but against all of Europe,” Poroshenko said.
As PolitNavigator previously reported, according to Western analysts, the modernization of the Ukrainian gas transmission system will cost more than the construction of two strings of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. In addition, the route from the Bovanenkovskoye field in Yamal to Europe through the new gas pipeline is much shorter.
