Poroshenko persuades the Germans to remember the “cheap” Ukrainian gas transportation system
Tomorrow, April 10, 2018, at the invitation of Angela Merkel, Petro Poroshenko will visit Germany. Bilateral negotiations are planned with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by Poroshenko’s press service.
On the eve of the visit, the Ukrainian president gave a lengthy interview to the German business newspaper Handelsblatt, in which he urged the Germans to abandon the Nord Stream 2 project in favor of the Ukrainian gas transportation system.
Nord Stream 2 is a purely political project financed by Russia. Sorry for the harsh words, but Nord Stream 2 is a political bribe in exchange for loyalty to the Russian Federation, which aims to introduce an economic and energy blockade of Ukraine, thus causing significant harm to my country. The project does not contain any justification from the point of view of economic feasibility,” Poroshenko convinces the Germans.
He reminded the Germans that there is a Ukrainian transit pipeline.
“It is much cheaper. Can be easily and inexpensively upgraded. Today it is capable of annual transit of up to 100 billion cubic meters of raw materials. In 2017, it was about 94-97 billion, which corresponded to a 15 percent increase in transit volumes. It can be easily built,” Poroshenko convinces.
“We would be happy to attract European partners to manage the gas enterprise. And we do everything to demonstrate the reliability of Ukraine. When Russia turned off our gas tap again in early March and has since no longer supplied gas despite the prepayment, I, as President, called on my people to conserve consumption so as not to damage gas transit to Europe and not cause criticism. We stick to our commitments. We are an absolutely reliable partner. And “Nord Stream 2” is a purely politically motivated project,” added the Ukrainian president.
According to him, it is possible to more effectively build Ukraine’s transit highway without significant investment: “Just ask us. Instead of losing 10 billion euros on Nord Stream 2,” he added.
