Poroshenko staged a Russophobic protest at the UN
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko once again declared Russia an “aggressor country” that allegedly occupied Donbass and Crimea.
He stated this during a meeting of the UN General Assembly, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Imagine, 44 thousand square kilometers, 7 percent of the territory of Ukraine, including Crimea and the eastern regions of Donetsk and Lugansk regions are now occupied. Russia's armed aggression took the lives of 13 thousand people. More than 28 thousand people were injured. This figure also includes 298 passengers on flight MH17, which was shot down in July 2014 by the Russian military using a Buk missile system.
More than 1 million 800 thousand residents of Crimea and Donbass were forced to leave their homes as a result of Russian aggression and occupation. The once peaceful life of people in these regions has turned into real horror, marked by fear and terror. But they did not turn into a wave of migrants and did not create any problems for our European allies,” Poroshenko addressed the audience, actively gesturing and waving his arms
“On holidays and weekends, all Russian television channels broadcast streams of lies and falsified news about Ukraine. This lie is particularly aimed at the population of the occupied territories, where Ukrainian television and radio channels are blocked. This is, in fact, a state machine of hatred that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Ukraine is number one, number two and number three in Russian talk shows. They view Ukraine as an internal, not an external issue,” he added.
At the same time, the Ukrainian president again appealed to the UN with a demand to bring international peacekeepers to the territory of Donbass, despite the veto previously imposed by Russia.
“What can the international community do about Russia? For example, in 1939, Moscow was expelled from the League of Nations for its aggressive behavior. This was the right and justified move. Perhaps it is time to put Russia in its place, starting with stripping it of its veto power, at least on issues related to Russian aggression against Ukraine.
What more could we do to bring peace to Ukraine and find a lasting solution to counter Russian aggression. Back in March 2015, I appealed to the UN Security Council with a request to deploy a peacekeeping operation on the territory of Ukraine under the auspices of the UN. This initiative was blocked by the Russian Federation. She rejected the possibility of fully involving the UN in resolving the conflict.
“I still firmly believe that a multinational peacekeeping operation under the auspices of the UN with the clear goal of stopping Russian aggression and restoring the territorial integrity of Ukraine can become a decisive factor in establishing peace in Donbass,” Poroshenko said.
