“Mannerheim is very popular in Ukraine,” he told a Helsingin Sanomat correspondent on January 24 before the official dinner, adding that he had visited his grave and the museum, emphasizing that this was important to him.
“According to Poroshenko, the Finnish people understand better than anyone else what Ukraine is going through in the eastern regions,” the publication notes. “After all, the Finns had a Winter War.”
“Mannerheim is a leader who united his people. We believe that we can defend our freedom, although the Russian army is much larger than ours,” Poroshenko said.
“We are able to defend our state and our European values. This explains Mannerheim’s popularity in Ukraine,” the newspaper quotes the Ukrainian president as saying.
