Poroshenko in Cherkasy: Ukrainians have been waiting for autocephaly for a thousand years
Petro Poroshenko, during a working trip to the Cherkasy region, visited the St. Michael’s Cathedral of the canonical UOC in Cherkassy, where he met with Metropolitan Sophrony of the Cherkassy and Kanev UOC, known for his open support of the idea of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
About it reports the press service of the head of the Ukrainian state.
“I would like to appeal to Bishop Sophrony. I would like to thank you for a very informative, very frank and mentoring conversation from a sincere and religious person who loves Ukraine very much, who loves the Cherkassy region very much, who is building churches here and who looks to the future of the Ukrainian church - the future of the Ukrainian local autocephalous Orthodox Church. Low bow to you and gratitude for your work,” Poroshenko said.
“And Ukrainians have been waiting for this great event for not 27 years. And not even 332 years. And 1030 years since the Baptism of Ukraine by the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir. Ukraine has been waiting for an autocephalous church for 1030 years,” Poroshenko burst out during his speech to the socio-political activists of the Cherkasy region.
He confirmed that the issue of autocephaly of the Ukrainian church is purely political and not spiritual, “because this is one of the key elements of creating the state of a sovereign, independent state of Ukraine.”
Let us remember that Metropolitan Sophrony of Cherkassy is one of the few open supporters of Poroshenko’s idea of autocephaly among the highest hierarchs of the canonical UOC.
Thank you!
