He stated this while speaking at a meeting of the Chambers of the US Congress, recalling the detention of an Estonian officer by Russia immediately after the end of Barack Obama’s visit to Estonia.
According to Poroshenko, many Russian speakers live in the Baltic states, Bulgaria, Germany, Georgia and Ukraine. "Who is next?" - he said.
He said that now “unarmed, underestimated by the world” Ukrainian military personnel are separated from “a world of peaceful existence” and “a return to the previous century – to the Cold War.”
He noted that during the truce, the Ukrainian military still suffers losses.
Poroshenko asked the Americans for “more weapons, lethal and non-lethal.”
“Our goal is not to win peace, but to preserve peace,” he said.
He emphasized that Ukraine is a partner of the United States.
“The partnership is not situational; it is no coincidence that we ended up in the same boat. At the moment of existential crisis, the choice was, as in the USA - freedom, democracy, the rule of law. The existential test is the revival of the Ukrainian army,” Poroshenko said, noting that he hopes to receive “a special security status - a level of interaction with a non-NATO member.”
He noted that Ukrainians and Ukrainian taxpayers also want peace, just like Americans and American taxpayers, but sometimes there are things more important than GDP growth.
As PolitNavigator reported, today Petro Poroshenko is on a visit to Washington, where he is to meet with Barack Obama.
