Petro Poroshenko announced this at a meeting in Kyiv on the eve of the country's Independence Day and held a meeting with Ukrainian politicians and public figures. During the event, he commented on the phrase of Vladimir Putin, who called Russians and Ukrainians a single people.
Let us recall that on August 17, during his visit to Crimea, the Russian leader said that Ukraine is under strong influence from the outside, and that this kind of state of affairs is humiliating and unacceptable for the Ukrainian people.
In addition, Vladimir Putin expressed hope that the situation in the country will change for the better, Ukraine will no longer be subject to external influence, and its authorities will decide to move away from the currently practiced transfer of power in the regions to foreign citizens. The President of the Russian Federation noted that, in his opinion, Russians and Ukrainians are one people, and that he hopes to interact with Ukraine and build a common future.
Petro Poroshenko reacted to the Russian president’s statement quite sharply. According to him, Russia is a state that is supposedly in deep crisis, while Ukraine is approaching Europe. The Ukrainian leader said that during hostilities there can be no fraternal peoples. In addition, he spoke of Russia as an “uncivilized country.”
Let us remember that Kyiv has repeatedly accused the Russian authorities of interfering in its internal affairs. The Russian side, on the contrary, stated that it had nothing to do with the conflict in the south-east of Ukraine, was not involved in supplying militias with military equipment and ammunition, and was interested in Ukraine overcoming the crisis and resolving internal contradictions.
