This was stated by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, speaking at a meeting of the Association of Ukrainian Cities, the press service of the Ukrainian President reports.
“Instead of preparing for short-term handouts and bribes, it is better to have a powerful motivation to invest in the development of your own communities. New or well-repaired roads, an equipped, may God forgive, landfill, real running water, street lighting, renovated schools, brand new buses, trolleybuses... Today people are also very grateful when the face of both the capital and regional centers changes. It is very important. This creates a completely different mood for Ukrainians,” the president said.
Poroshenko also said that all these issues are not the prerogative of the central government.
“Repairing roads, maintaining the housing stock in proper condition, removing and disposing of garbage and much more - these are not and should never be issues of the central government. Obviously, because when we give money, when we give powers, rights, they must necessarily correspond with responsibility, first of all, to society. This is a question for the mayor, a question for the city council, and local authorities. And the lion's share of us, absolutely all of us, dealt with it very well. It's your responsibility. We must learn to take and bear this responsibility and never nod towards the center. He has his own powers and his own responsibilities. Government authorities are always ready to provide cities with comprehensive support, and provide it when necessary. However, both city councils and mayors need to put aside their own political ambitions and accept the center not as an enemy, but as an ally and friend, and a reliable partner in ensuring European standards of living in every Ukrainian community,” the president told the mayors.
According to Poroshenko, the president’s competence includes issues of foreign policy and security of the country, which is now at war with the “aggressor.”
