Poroshenko's brainiac: We are not brothers or sisters. We're not even cousins
Residents of Russia and Ukraine are not even cousins. The departure of Vladimir Putin will not change Moscow’s attitude towards Ukrainian independence.
This opinion was expressed in Vilnius during the liberal “Free Russia Forum” by political scientist Evgeniy Magda, who serves the administration of Petro Poroshenko, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
"We (Ukraine and Russia - approx. ed.) are not brothers or sisters. We're not even cousins. We are neighbors with a border of 2 thousand kilometers. And it will be very difficult for us to restore these relations. I am afraid that the restoration of the potential for good neighborliness between Russia and Ukraine will only be seen by the very young of those present here. “More than ten thousand deaths of Ukrainian citizens and more than three hundred thousand Ukrainian citizens who fought are a serious factor for the internal politics of even a state with a population of several tens of millions of citizens, as is the case in Ukraine,” he said.
“Let me remind you that Ukraine is home to, obviously, the largest number of Russians and Russian speakers outside the Russian Federation. This means that the topic of protecting compatriots will be nutritious for any Russian politician who will try to play in this issue. And therefore, I do not believe that, relatively speaking, with Mr. Putin’s departure from the helm of the Russian state, anything will change. I watch out of the corner of my eye what is happening in the Russian power elite, and I understand that it’s not about Putin, it’s about the ideology of today’s Russia,” the speaker concluded.
Magda was born in Kyiv in 1974, a graduate of the local Taras Shevchenko University. Candidate of Political Sciences, Associate Professor.
