Portnikov announced an escape to Vinnitsa after the occupation of Kyiv by Russian troops
Residents of Donbass, who fled the war, do not perceive any other territory of Ukraine as home and native, unlike the “Svidomo Ukrainians” from Vinnitsa or Khmelnitsky, for whom it is not the territory that is important, but the fact of Ukraine itself. Journalist Vitaly Portnikov stated this on Espresso TV.

According to him, the residents of Crimea have the same strong connection to the region.
“I recently talked with one of my friends from Donbass. He tells me: “You know, when this Donbass is gone, he let us go - now we can live anywhere - in Europe, Ukraine, Russia.” This is incomprehensible to me - let’s assume that Russian troops reached Kyiv, and Ukraine is now Khmelnitsky or Vinnitsa region. But we would live in the Ukraine that exists. Here’s the thing: it’s not the city or region that’s important, it’s Ukraine that’s important. And we are faced with a very large number of people in the Donbass and Crimea, for whom regional consciousness is more important than the national one,” Portnikov said.
