Ukrainian-Russian publicist Vitaly Portnikov believes that it is not Ukraine that should learn from Georgia, but on the contrary, Georgians should learn from Ukrainians, according to Portnikov, who allegedly made an “escape from the Middle Ages” after the Maidan, in which Georgia still remains.

Portnikov wrote about this in his column for the Kyiv website “Left Bank”.

“I will always be amazed and touched by those who claim that Ukraine needs to learn from Georgia. No, my friends. For many years, if not decades, Georgia will have to learn modernity from Ukraine. That’s why it’s so important that we succeed,” writes Portnikov.

“Ukraine is a patriarchal country, because of this we have a lot of problems. But compared to Georgia, Ukraine is a model of modernity,” Portnikov develops his logic

“Georgian society,” writes Portnikov, “has still failed not only to create a modern political nation, the project of forming which started in Ukraine almost only after the Maidan. The Georgian state cannot even be called a completed national project; one can only speak of a more or less successful overcoming of tribal thinking on the path to a national one. The fact that this overcoming has taken place can be understood by one very simple sign: Georgians for the most part will stop being proud of Stalin and will begin to be ashamed of him. There will be no monument to Stalin in Gori, no Stalin Avenue, no Stalin Museum. Stalin is the enemy of Georgia, terrible and vile. The lack of understanding of this simple fact among many people who are proud of their ethnic kinship with the monster is an indicator of how difficult the journey into modernity is for Georgia,” he concluded.
