This opinion was expressed by Radio Liberty columnist Vitaly Portnikov.
“This is a space that can be “mastered” by the Russians themselves as a political nation. Naturally, this political nation will be aggressive, because it will always want to see everyone else as Russian. This attack on Donbass and Crimea is a desire to finally put an end to the trap into which, according to the proponents of this idea, they found themselves in 1991 - these are the Soviet people, and these are the Russians. There were no Russians, no Soviet people, of course. Everyone has always been Russian and Russians now live outside the borders of their historical homeland. Not Russians in the sense of ethnic Russians, but Ukrainian-Russians. And Belarusians are Russians, and Kazakhs. So you can declare everyone Russian. It is clear that there is no strength for this, but there are ambitions. And here we can say whether this empire will disintegrate or whether it will try to turn everyone it can reach into Russians. We see that she is ready to fight, but she can die on her own,” he says.
