“For Russia, Crimea has enormous sacred and civilizational significance, like the temple mount in Jerusalem. Crimea is important because the spiritual origins of the “heterogeneous but monolithic Russian nation” begin here: here in Chersonesos, Prince Vladimir adopted Christianity,” Putin announced, again recalling the legality of the referendum on the reunification of the peninsula with Russia.
He emphasized that the West is responsible for the tragic events in Ukraine, in particular, support for the armed coup d'etat.
“It’s hard to even believe how it all started - with President Yanukovych’s technical decision to postpone the signing with the EU... It was not about abandoning the agreement, but about postponing the deadlines... How can you support an armed seizure of power, violence, murders... How can you support this under hypocritical conversations about protecting human rights,” Putin said.
According to him, “American friends, directly or behind the scenes, influence relations with our neighbors.” Putin added that “sometimes you don’t know who to talk to” – either the leadership of the former Soviet republic or directly with the Americans.
In Ukraine, in the story of signing an agreement with the EU, Russia, “to put it in popular terms, was simply sent away,” Putin believes.
The result was the ruin of Ukraine and civil war, he stated.
Putin also mentioned the latest events in Grozny, expressing confidence that the security forces will eliminate the militants. The President recalled that the West also made plans to dismember Russia and supported separatism in the Russian Federation, calling Caucasian militants “rebels” and freedom fighters.
“Support for separatism in Russia from across the hill was absolutely obvious... We would be gladly allowed to follow the Yugoslav scenario of dismemberment. We remember well who supported separatism back then and called the murderers, whose hands were stained with blood up to their elbows, nothing less than rebels. The policy of containment was not invented yesterday; it has been carried out in relation to our country for the 10th anniversary, if not the century. However, talking to Russia from a position of strength is pointless,” Putin said.
