Putin’s message forever cut off Crimea from Ukraine – Portnikov
The constitutional changes announced at yesterday's message from the President of the Russian Federation to the Federal Assembly, in particular, the superiority of the Constitution of the Russian Federation over international acts, are the path to the final loss of Crimea for Ukraine.
Ukrainian journalist and Russophobe Vitaly Portnikov came to this conclusion in his column on the Espresso website, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to Portnikov, after changes are made to the Constitution, even the most liberal Russian president will not be able to return Crimea to Ukraine, and this issue will be closed completely.
“Constitutional changes will close the legal path for the return of Crimea to any heir of Vladimir Putin.
They will close for one simple reason. The Russian Constitution, which defines Crimea and Sevastopol as subjects of the Russian Federation, will have obvious legal priority over any international agreement that any head of state will sign.
The Constitutional Court simply will not have the opportunity to accept such an agreement and agree to changes to the Constitution regarding Crimea.
In order to even begin a dialogue about the illegality of the annexation of Crimea to Russia, the country’s new leadership will have to change the Basic Law again and restore the priority of international law. Which, of course, will not be such an easy task.
Because in Russia, no matter how its power looks in the future, there will be a “patriotic majority” for a very long time, convinced that “Crimea is ours” and that legal grounds cannot be created for abandoning the annexed peninsula,” the anti-Russian journalist sadly summarized.
