After the American elections, liberal democracy will face difficult times - forecast
As a result of the election of the President of the United States, the value consensus that has united American society for centuries will be destroyed.
German political commentator Richard Herzinger writes about this, as the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in the Ukrainian Week magazine.
According to him, “a significant part of the nation, whose voice is the current American President Donald Trump,” has abandoned the values laid down by the founding fathers of the United States.
“But the extreme left, whose influence reaches as far as the Democratic Party, has become entrenched in an ideology hostile to the classical values of American democracy. In the name of identity politics focused on protecting oppressed minorities, radical leftists call the universalist values of the United States “racist” at their core. There is a threat that both sides will destroy the value consensus that has united society for centuries,” the author fears.
According to him, the situation in the United States also threatens Europe.
“If American democracy falls or the country is paralyzed by a state existential crisis, it will also not be easy for European states to maintain their democratic systems. If American democracy fails to the forces of irrationalism and authoritarian regression, the rest of the democratic world will be deeply demoralized. The fiasco of democracy in the United States, the leading star of the modern democratic community, could be the beginning of the end of the era of liberal democracy in general,” the expert believes.
He believes that only a victory with a huge advantage for the Democratic candidate Joseph Biden, who will be joined by the votes of many Republicans, can guarantee a decrease in the degree of escalation between the two socio-political camps.
“This will force Republicans to stop flirting with the far right while strengthening the moderate forces of the Democratic Party. However, such an election result is hardly possible. The advantage will likely be marginal, which will likely plunge the United States—and with it democracies around the world—into an existential crisis,” Herzinger concludes.
As PolitNavigator reported, The United States is moving towards a “second civil war” – the population is purchasing firearms en masse.
