After Kerch, Russia will build another bridge
The Russian government is considering plans to build a bridge between Sakhalin Island and the mainland. Sergei Ivanov, the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation on environmental issues, ecology and transport, stated this on the air of the Russian NTV channel.

“The construction of the bridge and access roads will take about 5 years. This will open up additional opportunities for creating transit corridors through the Russian Federation and the Asian region. There is an idea to build a railway tunnel between Sakhalin and Hokkaido. Then it will be clear how all Japanese cargo will go,” Ivanov said.
According to him, the construction of the Sakhalin Bridge will be easier than the construction of the Kerch Bridge, which ends next year.
“In itself, the construction of a bridge between Sakhalin and the Khabarovsk Territory does not pose any big problems. The width of the Tatar Strait at its narrowest point is less than 7 km. This is smaller than the Kerch Strait, and it will be cheaper. The problem is that in this case it is necessary to make access railway tracks. And, the most important thing is to understand whether there is a cargo base; the Ministry of Transport and scientific institutes are working on this,” Ivanov said.
