After the crisis caused by the coronavirus epidemic, the European Union will need new resources and markets, and therefore Brussels will have to reconsider its attitude towards the EAEU.

German political scientist Alexander Rahr stated this during a live broadcast from Germany on the YouTube channel “UKRLIFE,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The presenter asked whether Russia, after the current crisis, could become a center of gravity for the countries of the post-Soviet space.

“As for Russia, I have always argued that everything in the world can change. Why were all these [Western] countries rich? Because the economy is at the highest level, production. Even we, Germany, without producing a lot, were still rich, because our whole life was set up, the main money was made on the stock exchanges. An export nation like Germany could still provide the whole world with its expensive products.

Today this production is leaving and has already gone to China and India. And in Russia, as in China, as in America and Canada, there are all these minerals, all these special raw materials, which the economy will increasingly need in the future. We will see to what extent the listed countries will use this in purely national interests. But it seems to me that the distribution of raw materials, who will have water and how it will be possible to organize public life and the economy after this crisis - this mixture of a strong state, a free economy and medium-sized businesses, whoever can recreate this faster will be the winner in this race. We’ll see who it will be,” Rahr said.

“I think that the Eurasian Union is not only Russia. Today you can see what is happening in Central Asia - these are countries that profit a lot from the fact that they are together with Russia and China. It seems to me that one of the lessons that the European Union will learn from this for a number of reasons, including that it will need new resources and markets, will reconsider its attitude towards the EAEU. I think that some kind of connection simply suggests itself here, and then let Ukraine look and decide for itself how it will behave and prosper in these new constellations,” added the German expert.
