“While the culture in Ukraine is becoming more and more individualistic and divides people, in Israel the people are united,” says seventeen-year-old former Kiev resident Mikhail, who flew to Israel to start a family with a Jewish woman. He met her at summer camp when he was only fourteen. Having learned that his chosen one was going to Israel, he moved to a Jewish school. At Ben Gurion Airport, Mikhail is with his parents, Nadezhda and Yuri. They also decided to move to Israel to live.

The publication also talks about a sixty-three-year-old married couple from Donetsk. “They have a technical education and the plant where they worked all their lives is closed. “No one is waiting for us in the rest of Ukraine, and living there is very expensive. Moreover, they will take revenge on us for participating in the referendum on the independence of the DPR in 2014. We hope to make a career in Israel,” say former Donetsk residents Lyubov and Alexey Yashta.

“Forty-two-year-old Kiev resident Evgeniy Lampakov dreamed of moving to Israel from the age of twenty-two, ever since he learned that his mother had hidden his real origin. She then wanted him to stay in Ukraine and assured him that the documents had been destroyed. However, after his mother died from cancer in 2013, Evgeniy found his real birth certificate in a closet, and this document allowed him and his wife Valentina to benefit from the repatriation program.”

The repatriation program has been in effect since 2014 and has included families not only from Ukraine, but also from other European countries, where, due to the growth of nationalist movements, hostility towards Jews has intensified.
