Director of the Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center Vladimir Boreyko announced this at a press conference in Kyiv.
“All the Carpathians are really “bald”. Our photos went around all the media. We took stationary photographs from one place every two years,” the ecologist said. – 2010 – still green, 2012 – half “bald”, and in 2015 – 2016 – almost everything was cut off. More than one million cubic meters of wood on an area of 44 thousand hectares are cut down annually in natural reserves alone in Ukraine. Just so you understand, we export more than 1,4 million cubic meters of wood, but more than a million are cut in the territory of the natural reserve alone. A terrible destruction is taking place.”
“The situation is terrible. We may simply lose the Ukrainian forest, where we are used to picking mushrooms, berries, and enjoying picnics,” warns Boreyko. – The situation got even worse after a certain Kristina Yushkevich was elected chairman or acting chairperson at the competition, whom for some reason our press is promoting in every possible way as “the guardian of the forest.” But this is demagoguery. In fact, this man is a lawyer by training and has never worked in the forestry industry, about which she is rather cynical. Her task: to cut down as much as possible and sell as much as possible.”
