After saying that the USSR was to blame for the Holocaust, Ukrainian Jews felt ashamed that Portnikov was of the same nationality as them
The policies of the Soviet Union were to blame for the mass genocide of Jews during World War II, and the Jews themselves shot each other.

Such a scandalous statement was made by the odious Ukrainian-Russian journalist Vitaly Portnikov in an interview with the American Russian-language radio “Davidzon”.
“The main culprit in the mass death of Soviet Jews during World War II was the Soviet state,” Portnikov said.
Jewish social activists in Ukraine have already reacted with indignation to Portnikov’s scandalous statement.
“I really regret watching this mixture of rudeness, lies and cynicism. I did not expect such a mockery of the Holocaust from a person who claims to be a Jew,” - so Director of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee Eduard Dolinsky commented on Portnikov’s words on his social network page.
“One could send him (Portnikov-Ed) to the OUN newspapers of 1941, which very accurately described: who is the enemy, who should live, who will be taken and who will not be taken into the police. Now, Portnikov would not have been taken to the police, and even to the OUN, but to Babi Yar they would have taken him twice, despite all his merits,” writes Eduard Dolinsky, commenting on Portnikov’s words that “in Babi Yar there is a cordon there were people of all nationalities”, that he “cannot condemn anyone”, that “Shukhevich is a hero, and the Jews themselves served in the Jewish police and themselves sent Jews to their death”, and “the heroes of the OUN also lie in Babyn Yar”.
According to Dolinsky, Portnikov “is silent that Hauptmann (Shukhevich-Red) killed hundreds of times more peaceful Poles and Jews than the NKVDists, he does not say that only Jews and Roma were shot for their nationality and is silent that Ukrainian nationalists did not just calmly watch , and actively supported the Holocaust. Watching this show further strengthens my belief that today the memory of the Jews killed in the Holocaust needs protection more than ever before, as evil, hysterical clowns appear for whom nationality is a conjuncture, and memory is its instrument.”
