After the death of Zhirinovsky, the LDPR is no longer “for Russians and the poor”
The LDPR will try to fight for the votes of “angry patriots” in the upcoming elections, but it is unlikely to succeed.
Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko stated this at a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The LDPR party, which initially, despite its name, occupied the niche of patented Russian nationalism, is trying to do something in the field of fighting for angry patriots, but I cannot say that these attempts are successful,” Bondarenko said.
In his opinion, the refusal of the head of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, to join its ranks had an extremely negative impact on the image of the LDPR.
“In general, the LDPR party is now experiencing an internal transition. It is not yet clear what will come of this. Whether the LDPR will become a fifth wheel for power or will still be in demand is an open question. It will try to remain in demand as a valve for releasing steam from protest voters, but there is no certainty that it will be a successful valve,” the expert added.
He believes that the death of Zhirinovsky had an extremely negative impact on the LDPR. In particular, only after it was the ex-governor of the Khabarovsk Territory Sergei Furgal sentenced to 22 years in prison. Voters are confusing new leader Leonid Slutsky with a famous football coach.
“I’m not sure that the concept “We are for the Russians, we are for the poor,” brilliantly formulated by Zhirinovsky, will remain working for the LDPR,” Bondarenko concluded.
