After Trump, Biden has nowhere else to increase sanctions against Russia - expert
American President Donald Trump, during his tenure, introduced all possible anti-Russian sanctions that would be painless for the United States.
Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council Andrei Kortunov said this during a discussion at the Valdai Club, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In Russia there are concerns about the US entering a new round of anti-Russian sanctions under Biden. In general, this is understandable; during the election campaign, Biden said that he would increase sanctions pressure on Moscow.
But here Biden faces a rather difficult choice, because Trump has already, to some extent, removed all the cream of the anti-Russian sanctions, that is, he accepted all those sanctions for which the United States did not have to pay dearly. To pay in terms of their own economic interests, in terms of the stability of the international economic and financial system, in terms of creating all kinds of additional political risks,” said the international expert.
“If the policy of sanctions against Russia is introduced to a new level, then Biden will have to pay a much higher price for it than the price Trump is paying.
Considering that Biden will have many other problems besides Moscow, it would probably be premature to expect any qualitative change in the sanctions pressure on Russia,” Kortunov explained.
