Ukraine's last allies in PACE supported Kyiv with a statement
At the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, delegations from seven countries protested against the return of Russia without sanctions, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and member of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE Irina Gerashchenko posted a corresponding statement on her Facebook page.
According to her, the statement, in addition to Ukraine, was also supported by Kyiv’s last allies in PACE - the Balts, Poles, Georgians and Slovaks.
“Of course, restoring the rights of the Russian delegation without the Russian Federation fulfilling any of the many demands of the Assembly is contrary to the core values of the Council of Europe and its Charter. This move sends a very wrong signal to a country that has resorted to armed aggression, poisoning of individuals, disregard for the rights of its citizens and an attempt to destabilize democracy in Europe instead of promoting its development,” the statement said.
The document also notes that the delegates of these 7 countries have “no answer for our people on how the Council of Europe protects their rights if it is more interested in protecting the well-being of the aggressor than the victims of aggression and repression.”
“The future of the Council of Europe as a whole is at risk because it is losing the trust of the people it is supposed to protect. We return home to consult with our parliaments and governments on joint action in the Assembly in the next sessions,” the statement said.
The delegates also noted that they wish the newly elected Secretary General good luck and hope that “she/he will find a way to resolve this unprecedented crisis of confidence that has been created this week.”
Earlier, PolitNavigator reported that PACE returned the powers of the Russian delegation in full.
