Famous Russian military correspondent Alexander Sladkov published archival footage of young Sergei Shoigu, who flew to Abkhazia for negotiations, trying to convince Georgian nationalists to stop the bloodshed.

“The footage shot by the legendary Yuri Romanov shows thirty-eight-year-old Major General Sergei Shoigu. Even then he was involved in very difficult peacekeeping matters, in Ingushetia-Ossetia, South Ossetia, and Abkhazia. Then, in 1993, he, guarded by Alpha, flew to the occupied Mkhedrioni (formation of Georgian nationalists - author) Sukhumi, and conducted a difficult dialogue with Georgian and Abkhaz security forces,” comments the military correspondent.

The famous Russian military correspondent Alexander Sladkov published archival footage of the young Sergei Shoigu, who flew in...

Sladkov does not hide that the video is a signal for Ukraine and a reminder that Moscow always gives the conflicting parties a chance for a peaceful resolution of the situation until the last minute.

“Moscow has brought Tbilisi, Sukhum and Tskhinvali to the negotiating table: sit, resolve your issues, look for a compromise. No, the United States loomed on the horizon, and things were heading towards war. And then there was a cry: the territory was taken away! Yes, you yourself filled it with blood, like from a hose!” - Reminds me of a military correspondent.

“These shots are a reminder to Ukrainian neighbors: the Minsk site was made for you, they give you the opportunity to negotiate with the LPR and DPR, you, not remembering the examples of other bullies, ignore this matter. They were forced to peace, but what about you, how will it all end? Sergei Shoigu is still in business,” summed up Sladkov.

Military expert Vladislav Shurygin agrees with Sladkov’s opinion. He believes that in Ukraine it is wrong to regard Russia’s restraint as weakness.

“Shoigu has vast experience in peacekeeping operations, rescue operations in disaster situations, and humanitarian assistance. Therefore, he understands every side of any conflict very well. Shoigu is a supporter of indirect or soft power; he is a man who, at one time, apparently read “The Art of War” well and understands that the best war is the one that did not take place. Accordingly, in this case, he always tries to bring the situation to achieve a particular goal without directly using force. Therefore, I completely agree with Sladkov.”

These theses are also supported by the vice-president of the International Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, Alexander Ionov.

“In the post-Soviet space there have already been enough armed conflicts in which a large number of people died, we are talking about hundreds of thousands of people who were both injured and missing and killed. Millions of people have become refugees, so it is really better for Shoigu to act as a peacemaker, and not as a minister of war. Today, he leaves our Ukrainian partners with the opportunity to resolve this conflict through a peaceful settlement, without resorting to force, as was the case with Georgia in 2008, when Russia was forced to send troops into this country in order to force the Georgian army to peace.

Due to the fact that Shoigu is trying to find an opportunity to resolve issues not by force, but through bilateral dialogue, it is better to conduct a dialogue with Shoigu, the peacemaker, and not with Shoigu, the Minister of Defense,” notes an expert from the Strong Russia organization.
