Last try. The US is increasing pressure on Nord Stream 2
The United States continues its efforts to disrupt the completion of the last kilometers of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Thus, the American Department of Justice included the gas pipeline operator Nord Stream 2 AG in the sanctions list of European companies. In addition, according to media reports, Washington intends to send Amos Hochstein, who until recently was a member of the supervisory board of the Ukrainian Naftogaz, to the EU for negotiations on stopping the construction of the gas pipeline, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
However, Igor Yushkov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, noted in a comment to Moskovsky Komsomolets that he does not see any potential levers of sanctions influence either on Nord Stream 2 AG or on its creditors.
“For example, the Americans will not be able to fine project participants retroactively for transactions once completed - this is contrary to European law,” the expert believes.
He predicts that the United States will seek from the EU a ban on the operation of the gas pipeline, for which purpose they are sending a specially trained person on a tour who will offer carrots to some of their European counterparts and show others the stick.
“It is obvious that the United States is increasing pressure on the project, and this is happening simultaneously with the aggravation of the situation in eastern Ukraine,” says Artem Deev, head of the analytical department at AMarkets.
“Now America is fighting to ensure that the pipeline is not put into operation, and that Kyiv maintains the transit of Russian gas through its territory,” the analyst adds. “And with the blacklisting of the construction operator, the game reaches a new level. What exactly awaits Nord Stream 2 AG if American sanctions are adopted is not clear.”
