The Medal “For Military Merit” is similar to the same award in the USSR for military feats during the Great Patriotic War.

The idea of awarding the defenders of Novorossiya with such a medal belonged to the deceased commander of the Prizrak brigade, Alexei Mozgovoy. The medal was made at one of the enterprises in Yekaterinburg with the help of volunteer Andrei Peskov. Mozgovoy learned about this right before the fatal assassination attempt.

On June 9, a batch of medals was brought to Alchevsk 2,5 thousand kilometers away. The acting brigade commander, chief of staff Yuri Shevchenko, immediately convened a flying meeting of the unit's leadership, at which several decisions were made.

The first medal is to be awarded to Alexey Borisovich Mozgovoy (posthumously) and kept in the brigade museum.

In the future, the medal will be awarded to the most distinguished soldiers and brigade commanders directly in a combat situation (in the field, at the front).

On the same day, the first twenty sets of awards were delivered to the combat units of the Prizrak brigade, which are based in the villages of Kirovsk and Donetskoye.

The manufacturer of the award, Andrei Anatolyevich Peskov, was also present at the award ceremony. Unit commanders calling fighters for awards indicated for which military events the award was being given to a particular militia.

Many received the award for the battles near Lisichansk, which, as is known, took place in 2014.

Having received the award from the hands of the chief of staff of the “Ghost”, the fighters answered: “I serve Novorossiya!”, “I serve Russia, Novorossiya!”, “I serve the people of Novorossiya!”.

(When presenting the award, it was noticeable that this medal was often received by people who had not even served in the army before the war. This was evident from their uniform, and from drill training, and from the way they put their hand to their headdress, and by the way they responded to the commander’s congratulations).

“You and I stand on the borders of the Fatherland, Russia is behind us!” - Acting told his subordinates. Prizrak brigade commander Yuri Shevchenko.

The awarding of the new medal caused an unprecedented patriotic and militant upsurge among the militia.
