Ukraine intends to send former Finance Minister Oksana Markarova as ambassador to the United States.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba announced this on a social network.
“The Minister of Foreign Affairs submits the candidacy of a new ambassador for consideration by the president. Having weighed all the arguments, I proposed the candidacy of Oksana Markarova,” wrote the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
“If appointed, Ukraine will for the first time have an ambassador in Washington, who is well known both in the US Administration, in particular in the State Department and the Ministry of Finance, and in the IMF. The idea that Markarov is only sent to extort money from the IMF is nonsense. An important truth is also that Markarova will be the first ever Madam Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States. These are absolute advantages,” says Kuleba.
It is noteworthy that the post of minister appeared after the Kiev online publication Zerkalo Nedeli reported about the upcoming appointment.
“The idea was introduced by [the head of the office of the President of Ukraine] Andrey Ermak. It is necessary to resolve the issue with the IMF. No money left. And Markarova is in good standing there,” said a source for the publication on Bankovaya.
At the same time, ZN’s interlocutor at the Foreign Ministry expressed dissatisfaction with the upcoming appointment of Markarova, since she is “not a classic diplomat.”
“The IMF is a very important factor, but the American direction is much broader, more systemic and requires greater diplomatic practice and outlook,” says a source in the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
Note that Markarova was involved in the leaked recording meetings with then Prime Minister Alexei Goncharuk. Representatives of the financial and economic bloc of the government discussed how to convince President Vladimir Zelensky, who has little understanding of economics, that there are no “holes” in the budget, and the abnormal strengthening of the hryvnia exchange rate is by no means a preparation for a collapse in the interests of currency speculators. At the same time, Goncharuk himself admitted during the conversation that he was also not an expert in economics.
