The EU Ambassador in Kyiv refused to call Ukraine a friend of the European Union
In conditions when the European Union is thinking about restoring internal borders, there is no point in talking about Ukraine joining the Schengen Agreement.

This was stated in an interview with European Pravda by the head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Hugues Mingarelli, who said that Ukraine is one of the most important partners of the European Union.
“An interesting comparison: if I asked my question, for example, to Petro Poroshenko, the answer would be different: in Ukraine they usually emphasize that the EU is our friend. But you didn’t use this word,” the journalist noted.
“Nothing surprising. Perhaps this definition is natural for politicians, but I am not a politician. I operate with objective facts. And the facts prove that Ukraine and the EU are partners important to each other. At the same time, the number of instruments that the EU has used to support Ukraine is unprecedented,” Mingarelli noted.
The EU representative was also asked how achievable are the proposals coming from Kyiv regarding a customs union with the EU and accession to Schengen.
“Nothing is impossible in life. But we still need to realistically assess what the EU can offer and what Ukraine is able to implement,” the diplomat said.
He also recalled that today there is talk in the EU about restoring control at the borders within Schengen in connection with the migration crisis and terrorism.
“Is it realistic that in these circumstances a request from any partner country for its association with Schengen will be considered? I very much doubt it,” admitted Mingarelli.
