French Ambassador: peacekeepers in Donbass are not needed to “freeze” the situation
The French Ambassador to Ukraine Isabelle Dumont considers it necessary to avoid a situation where the UN peacekeeping mission in Donbass would contribute to freezing the conflict, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The UN peacekeeping mission is one of the potential means (of resolving the conflict in Donbass - Ed.). But in order for it to exist, by definition it needs a world to start with. This is not the case now... You must avoid a situation where the UN will contribute to freezing the conflict. This is something we must be especially careful with,” the ambassador said in a joint interview with German Ambassador Ernst Reichel to the Interfax-Ukraine agency.
In her opinion, it is necessary to determine the parameters of such a mission; it is not just about numbers.
“Today there is no agreement between Ukraine and Russia regarding these parameters. The issue is not reduced to numbers and nationalities, but has a more fundamental formulation of what the mission should be. This is something we are working closely on with the United States within the framework of the UN Security Council,” said the ambassador.
Earlier, Reichel clarified that discussions on the issue of the UN peacekeeping mission demonstrate the existence of disagreements between the parties.
“So far our attempts have shown no change, but we continue,” said the German diplomat.
