German Ambassador reprimands Serbs for “not meeting European standards”

German Ambassador to Serbia Thomas Schieb said that Serbia's achievements in the field of the rule of law this year are not satisfactory for opening new pages in accession negotiations with the EU.

This was reported by Beta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The speed with which a candidate country moves closer to the EU depends above all on implementing rule of law reforms, on which Serbia has made little progress this year,” Schieb said. “It was found that progress has been modest and the conditions for opening new stages of the negotiation process have not been met.”

At the same time, along with the whip, the German diplomat did not do without the traditional carrot, adding that he “has the feeling that the new government is extremely interested in reforms and has already begun to engage in them.”

“We can only encourage the government to continue on this path, for example by adopting a media strategy action plan...

There is no reason to be disappointed, we must now begin the path to membership dynamically and with enthusiasm... The process of European integration will not be completed without the countries of the Western Balkans. They have a clear perspective.

Serbia is on the right track... Germany is here to support Serbia and give advice. We may not have made as much progress as we would have liked this year, but I am confident that we will be successful next year,” added Shieb.
