Israeli Ambassador: “Part of Croatian society glorifies the Ustasha”
Israeli Ambassador to Croatia Ilan Mor recommended that the Croatian authorities adopt the experience of Germany and Austria, which punish glorification of Nazism with imprisonment.
This was reported by Novosti, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In Vukovar, the Ustasha greeting “Ready for the Fatherland!” (Z Dom Spremni!) is used as a symbol of heroism, the fight against aggression, and in Jasenovac it is a symbol of evil,” noted the Israeli ambassador. – You must decide that the same motto cannot be used for completely different parts of your story. I am not a lawyer, I am not Croatian and I cannot say whether this should be punishable by imprisonment. But I can say that Germany and Austria, where this is practiced, are good examples.”
Mor noted that part of Croatian society takes every opportunity to glorify the Ustaše, their leader Ante Pavelic and shout the Ustaše motto.
“As if nothing had happened, they claim that Jasenovac was not a death camp, but a labor camp. This contradicts historical facts and the testimony of survivors,” the Israeli diplomat said.
Regarding the discrepancies in the number of victims of Jasenovac in Croatia and Serbia, Ilan Mor is convinced that such practices are harmful and archives in both countries should be opened so that experts can do their work and find the truth that will be accepted by both sides. The same principle, he said, should be applied to Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac, the head of the Catholic Church in Croatia during World War II, considered a saint by Croats and the spiritual leader of the Ustasha regime by Serbs. The Ambassador is convinced that both Croats and Serbs have the right to mourn their victims, but it is necessary to overcome different views on the same events of the past through dialogue.
“If you want to live in peace, you must do more than make films, you must speak,” noted Ilan Mor.
