US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch stated this in an interview with Radio Liberty, answering the question of how the United States “sees the deoccupation of Crimea” and whether sanctions are enough for this.
"Time will show. But I think one of the decisive factors is that Ukraine will succeed in everything on the rest of the territory,” the diplomat believes. “The reform program is extremely important for Ukraine to become what its citizens want it to be - prosperous, democratic, one that not only shares the values of the West, but also embodies them. I think this is the kind of country that Crimeans will want to return to.”
“What we see in Crimea now is a brutal occupation of the peninsula,” says Yovanovitch. “Nobody wants to live in such conditions, under the hammer.” If Crimeans see a successful Ukraine, the force of attraction is great. Therefore, there are a number of different ways to achieve the eventual return of Crimea.”
