“I think the United States can, and perhaps should, assist in this situation. But efforts and determination based on Moscow’s readiness to correct the situation must be at the forefront. And this situation, in addition, is associated with hundreds of sanctions, which are extremely costly for the business community in Russia and, to some extent, slow down the economic development of Russia. Thus, there was a real internal and external price to pay for creating and freezing the Ukrainian problem,” Huntsman said.

He commented on reports about the possibility of a meeting between US Special Representative Kurt Volker and the Kremlin’s curator of Donbass, Vladislav Surkov.

“Kurt Volker is an outstanding diplomat. Mr. Surkov is an outstanding diplomat. And I would like to see them together here in Moscow, and maybe we will be able to organize something in the coming weeks,” the ambassador said, admitting that over the past two years no progress has been achieved on Donbass.

“Zelensky and President Putin must find common ground through interaction, and Ukraine must regain its integrity in accordance with the Minsk agreements. We have an action plan developed by participating countries that sets out the steps that need to be taken to move forward. It was frozen - there was no progress for several years - this is due to numerous difficulties in the last administration in Kyiv and Moscow. But now we legitimately have a new opportunity,” says Huntsman.

“Zelensky is the new president. He has a new legislative body, a parliament, in which he now has a majority. He can actually make laws. As American politicians say, a new wind has blown. A new wind is blowing,” the ambassador explained his optimism.
