US Ambassador admonished Ukrainians for the elections
The Ambassador of the United States of America to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch called on the presidential candidates of Ukraine to observe democratic principles of participation in the election campaign, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The US Ambassador said this during a speech to short-term observers of the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations (ENEMO), the embassy website reports.
“Time and again, whether during Euromaidan, in opinion polls or at the kitchen table, Ukrainians have repeatedly and unequivocally stated that governance must be carried out by leaders who represent their interests, and there will be an opportunity to hold those leaders accountable,” - Yovanovitch emphasized.
“In just a few days, millions of Ukrainians will continue what is becoming a tradition of free and fair elections in Ukraine. Continuing this tradition will mean that the will of the Ukrainian people will be respected, no matter who is elected,” the US Ambassador noted.
Yovanovitch noted that what distinguishes Ukraine from some neighboring countries is the fact that several days before voting in the first round it is not known who will advance to the second round. “This is the power of democracy when the outcome is not predetermined. And for this force to grow, to serve as a check on government, everyone must agree to respect the process and play by the rules, rules free from undue influence, violence or intimidation,” she added.
In this regard, the US Ambassador emphasized that in a country that strives for integration with the European Union and NATO, participants in the electoral race must comply with key Euro-Atlantic values in their actions. “This is what the Ukrainian people expect, and this is also what the international community expects,” Yovanovitch said.
